Born in the same year as Led Zep I & II (a good year!) and was stunned into life long worship by Maiden in '82. Since then listened to just about anything, but mainly metal, hard/heavy prog rock, grunge, alt-rock (anything with guitars).

Best Prog Rock/Metal by PMac

"Having downloaded many prog rock/prog metal albums, these are my top picks. Take into account my preferences start with the Zep/Purple/Sabbs in the 70s through Lizzy, Priest, Maiden, Dio into Marillion, Rush, Fates Warning, Queensryche, Metallica, Helloween, Megadeth left through 90's grunge (the popular ones not the dubious cred ones), Manic Street Preachers, Tool, System Of A Down into more recently Porcupine Tree & Opeth. So that's where I'm coming from - never been big on the death metal or the cookie monster vocals!"

"Scandinavian prog metal with spooky s..." more

"Scandinavian prog metal with spooky sci-fi themes. Sounds absolutely sensational and on repeated listening starts to stick in your head with some tasty hooks. Possibly a little cold, mechanical for some, but that approach complements the lyrical themes so I am good with it." less

"Good solid UK prog which may be a lit..." more

"Good solid UK prog which may be a little on the conservative side, doesn't ever rock too hard or get to technical, but decent songcraft pays off." less

"Not available in Oz, but I have on CD..." more

"Not available in Oz, but I have on CD. Monstrously good prog metal - if Dio and Malmsteem had united in the 80s and evolved this is pretty much where you could imagine they would end up. Perfection!" less

"Couldn't tolerate the original Saga v..." more

"Couldn't tolerate the original Saga vocalist, but after 30 years they get a decent singer and voila - enjoyable stuff!" less

"Another acquired taste, but an astoun..." more

"Another acquired taste, but an astounding keyboard and bass driven sound with tasty guitar tones and dynamic song structures. Not an instant record but grows with repeated listens and worth the investment" less

"Emenating from somewhere around Maril..." more

"Emenating from somewhere around Marillion but with a more hadr rock sound - great songs, dynamics, tastefully melodic and modestly prog." less

"I normally steer clear of growled dea..." more

"I normally steer clear of growled death style vocals, but here they are used more musically than most and blended with clean melodic vocals which at times verge on AOR listenability. A blend of style which ultimately pays off, there are some great songs on this." less

"Works in areas like Marillion, Floyd,..." more

"Works in areas like Marillion, Floyd, Radiohead, Tool - basically united traditional prog sensibilities with more contemporary sounds and works like a charm!" less

"Astounding polished and perfectly exe..." more

"Astounding polished and perfectly executed German prog metal. Up there with Symphony X IMHO. Musicianship on par with Dream Theater but actually with killer songs." less

"A revelation. Never heard of this ban..." more

"A revelation. Never heard of this band but this is prog rock par excellence. Awesome rhythm section and a great clear voiced passionate vocalist combined with first rate songcraft." less

"Some kind of masterpiece. Jorn's voca..." more

"Some kind of masterpiece. Jorn's vocals are exceptional and the diversity of songs takes this beyong prog/power metal. Encompasses everything that's great about heavy music." less
