Wow, cool list, thanks!

I've been going a lot to Japan recently and had the fortune of seeing bands like Super Snazz play (and hang out with the members at several occasions). I've also picked up a bunch of 7" singles with girl bands, including:

The Go-Devils (similar to Gitogito and 5-6-7-8's)
The Feminine (garage rock)
Go Kitty (powerpop)
The Heck (punk)
Romanes (all Ramones covers in Japanese!)
Six (60's pop style)

If you ever go to Tokyo, you need to check out Poor Cow, a bar run by the singer of the amazing Firestarter, and Record Store Base and Disk Union Punk, perhaps the most well-stocked punk/garage/power-pop record stores in the world.

Thanks for the Small Color heads up, I was very taken by the freebie but didn't spot the album, you must've posted the moment it showed.

Credits refreshed today and so far from my list above, along with all the Berry Roll, I've grabbed Gitogito Hustler's Gito Gito Galore (Ω). Playing now and sounding really good, even better than the samples suggested. I'll probably pass on SpecialThanks, the more I listen to the samples the more I'm reminded of Avril Lavigne.

A trip to Tokyo with a wallet full of cash is the dream, hopefully one day.

Not punky but more in the shambling indie vein is Beat Caravan - bassist Miho the Jet Girl sometimes sings. They have an EP on eMusic:

Interesting indie band Goomi's album Megamittsu has just been added. Quite varied in style, with girls on bass & drums, & a guy on guitar & violin, all providing vocals.

Some recent arrivals:

Boris Japanese Heavy Rock Hits V.3 - "16:47:52" - first song is mellow with lovely vocals from female guitarist Wata. Not typical Boris, who are normally known for heavy rock & drones. I'd like to hear her sing like this over one of their heavier tracks.

...also:
Acoustic folky stuff with Japanese female vocals form Oxalis (3 albums).

...&:
Cute electro pop from Tika-Tika.

always good to plug boris. over on amie st. you can get the boris + sunn o))) collaboration for cheaps. likewise, it is NOT stoner drone you might associate with boris. hevvy love for "sinking belle".

zypressenweg,
I love "sinking belle" too! I recommend guest vocalist Jesse Sykes stuff with her band The Sweet Here After: Like, Love, Lust and the Open Halls of the Soul & Gentleness of Nothing (strangely these don't show up for me in UK on the artist page, but if you search by album title they are there. A search for her name just brings up this album, with her vocals on Aeriel's Song: The Tempest)

let me know if you can grab the carla bruni french recording - we can't get it here stateside...just the english recordings. go figure.

by the by, of the things we share in common, the goto izumi (it was free on amie st) and tenniscoats (+pastels) are my favorite. in fact Oetsu to Kanki no Nanoriuta (Given Song by Sob and Joy) is about the most beautiful song i have in my collection.

clink.

the carla bruni is available in UK, but we can't get the Pastels / Tenniscoats over here :(

By the way for more Japanese music you can try HearJapan. They are based in Japan but available worldwide. Not as cheap as here, but cheaper than importing CD's from Japan. They also might have stuff that's hard to find for download (legally) elsewhere, though some stuff on there has ended up appearing on emusic a bit later (so check back here if you find something you like on there). My favorite band I found on there is Sleep Warp (not available here).

Hi everyone:

Just to contribute on the topic, here are other Japanese female vocalists you can find around here.

School Food Punishment
A must have. Super-indie band that is starting to get some major press coverage in Japan (they are now signed with Sony). E-music only has one of the first EPs from January/2009. It is a great place to start.
http://www.emusic.com/artist/School-Food-Punishment-MP3-Download/12226290.html

Mikuni Shimokawa
Anime singer fan-favorite. E-music has a compilation of anime songs and a best-of record.
http://www.emusic.com/artist/Mikuni-Shimokawa-MP3-Download/12163914.html

Masami Mitsuoka
Another anime singer. She achieved major commercial success and in 2009 decided to go for something that sounds more electropop. She even changed her artistic name to "Mizca". Not sure if that was a good idea... E-music has an EP from Last Cross, theme from the famous anime "Reborn". The Ep´s cover is lousy to say the least.
http://www.emusic.com/artist/Masami-Mitsuoka-MP3-Download/12165254.html

Dot Rainbow
http://www.emusic.com/album/Dot-Rainbow-Negaimirai-Mitsukae-MP3-Download/11572410.html

E-music could really put up an effort to increase its jpop/jrock catalog. Hope that helps for the time being.

Thanks dansudansu,
Yeah I've the School Food Punishment, & recently downloaded the Dot Rainbow ep. (I think I got one song by Masami Mitsuoka, & I may have saved one of the Mikuni Shimokawa for later - I'll have check them out again.)
Seeing your reference to Sony, I was wondering if any of their Japanese artists turned up when all the Sony music was added (not that I would be able to download any of it because I'm in the UK :( ).
I go through the Freshly Ripped every day, so if I find anything interesting I'll post it here>
JTO Jan 16 at 8:57 AM EST RE: Japanese female vocalists

New Asobi Seksu single / EP Layers - it maybe UK only, but has the same b-side tracks as the US Transparence EP.

Hi ZERO,
I only downloaded 7 Sayaka Suzuki songs in the end. It's all rather chirpy, cute & cheesy music wise, but she's got a beautiful voice (I downloaded them more for her singing than the music). I tried to find the least annoying sounding songs. Tanuki Song on My Story sounds a bit like traditional Japanese music. If you like upbeat songs with retro computer game music it might be to your taste.
ZERO Jan 16 at 10:25 AM EST RE: Japanese female vocalists
in response to the message by JTO
Actually, I'm kind of into chiptunes (the more contemporary Gameboy scene) so I'd probably like the chirpy stuff over the traditional stuff.

Thanks for the rec!

Here's something that might very well be of interest. The site has a number of 12 song streaming sets, with some unifying theme for them. The link I've provided is for Shibuya-Kei, and I've even been able to find some of these artists on eMusic.

JTO Jan 17 at 8:20 AM EST RE: Japanese female vocalists
in response to the message by ZERO
Thanks for the link ZERO, looks like an interesting site. I did a search and found some songs by the latest Japanese band I'm getting into: all-girl pop-rock trio Chatmonchy (sadly not on emusic UK because they are on Sony's Ki/oon Records; perhaps they appeared in the US when all the Sony releases arrived (?) - there's lots of interesting Japanese bands on Sony, which might be why I can't find much j-pop or j-rock available on emusic UK, just the few independent releases that make it out of Japan). I'm trying to find a cheap way to get Chatmonchy's albums in the UK - ordering then from Japan is expensive (basic price is quite high already, then there's postage, and finally customs charges (tax & handing)).

Downloading GAME now.

Listening to the samples (and now the first downloaded track) the review at www.japanator.com seems to be spot on If you're looking for head-bobbing, booty-shaking tracks full of glittery melody, you'll find no better. A big shame track 1 is missing. tyvm for the rec.

Looks like this thread has grown quite a bit since I last visited the site, I'll have to work through it sometime very soon.

{addition} GAME has gone, from the UK at least. Very odd. I wonder if it will return with the missing first track? Their first single has appeared in it's place but the sound is very very different, no vocaloid-style vocals for starters.

Mr cloud,
Thanks for the latest on Perfume. I thought GAME was a great find, but now it's gone... I hope it does come back because I didn't have any credits left to download any of it! :(
(my downloads refresh next Wednesday, so I hope it's back by then...)
That single sounds like a different band, more cute and girlie, or かわいい ("kawaii") as the Japanese would say. Not as interesting sounding as GAME.

new today (no substitute for Perfume's GAME, of course):

Hi scrubbles.net,
There's not much music with Japanese vocals on emusic & I've probably found most of the stuff with Japanese female vocals already (though that list is my personal favorites, so there maybe other stuff on emusic).
Not that familiar with Puffy Amiyumi (though I did used to watch their cartoon show), but you may like:

very cute J-pop (looks like she's still just a girl on the cover): Osakana Tengoku 2010 by Ayano Kawamura.

Indie rock: Burn Cross.

A mini-album from Eve Scaptive: Human Love. (...actually these are the same tracks as 3 singles...just all on one album with a slightly different cover...choose your favorite colour...)

Anime music from anime studio Fujiigumi.

Something tropical: Tropical Japonesque by Kiwi & The Papaya Mangoes.

Pop with a touch of jazz: Chikyu Wo Totteyo by Maia Barouh.

Mellow indie pop: Ame Hare by Minna-Zu.

Funky j-pop: Babyboom by Modern Girl&Sniper.

60's style guitar pop (sounds pretty good): Koi To Ai To Renai Ni Tuite by Salome's Lips.

(whoa, that's quite a lot today!)

new stuff from the last few days:

2 j-pop singles from B.L.T.Idol College1: Koi Nano Desu & B.L.T.Idol College's Theme (with instrumental versions).

3 songs from Chiaki on Mother.

3 pop-rock songs from Jun Kadotani on Haikei Lonely Shy Sama.

I like song 1, Kyousou No Utage (symphonic rock) & song 4, Hiiro No Toki (pop-rock) on Kioku Memento Mori Vizaru No Nikki feat. Rekka Katagiri by Rekka katagiri.

3 pop songs by Yui Ibuki on Futari Ha Zutto Suteki Na Koi Wo Shite Imashita.

But maybe my favorite of this batch:

I am travelling in Japan and yesterday I saw the three girls in The Go-Devils play in Osaka. It was an amazing experience, they have new cool costumes every time (the singer's sister makes them) and play incredibly tight and loud covers of obscure 60's garage rock. To be honest, like many Japanese garage rock bands the experience does not really translate well to record, but live they are a blast. For the curious I just found a compilation that features the Go-Devils and many other favorite bands of Rockin' Jelly Bean, an Osaka artist who is married to the Go-Devil's singer, MoMo:

And it keeps growing :)

I just popped on for a quick scan of the site (have barely had a chance the past few weeks, even lost 8 credits from last month) and found that 2 albums by Perfume have turned up. Triangle sounds very similar to GAME (the one that disappeared) while the Complete Best seems to mix both old and new.

[addition] I've just noticed that track 5 and 9 on Triangle are faulty, only a partial download, will flag it.

thanks for the heads up on the latest Perfume additions MrCloud (I think I'll download then soon in case they disappear like GAME..& I heard One Room Disco on the plane when I went to Japan).
Here's the proper cover for ⊿ (triangle).
Hmm...Complete Best seems incomplete - only 6 of 12 tracks showing (missing tracks 2, 4, 7, 10, 11 & 12) (still better than nothing).

Hi 68, interesting challenge; I'll see what I can come up with.

That video reminds me of the koto music of this group: Yamato Ensemble. (maybe appropriate for a traditional Japanese meal, & they have some traditional female vocals)

Anyway, here's my latest finds:

Zeze by Veronica Veronico ~ acoustic rock.

How To Fly In The Sky by Manamana ~ gentle acoustic songs.

Blue Londo (should be Rondo as in the art work - it's the old "r" / "l" sound confusion) by Mayumi Kojima ~ upbeat retro pop.

Another Sky by Emii ~ pop.

Don´t say lazy by I Love You! Project ~ rockin' electro pop (track 1) (I think this is actually a German group doing anime song covers - the label is called Anime Records).

Hey JTO, I'm not on these forums often but I just thought I'd let you know I really appreciate this thread. Finding Japanese music on this site is certainly a challenge, mainly due to weird categorisation. I thought I'd bump this, in case you or anyone else has found any Japanese stuff on the site. Do share please :)

Thanks Jellyfish,
Good to hear someone is interested in my recommendations. Hope you've been checking out my list too (includes stuff posted here plus more - see page 2).

A lot of Japanese music turns up under the style Asia in the genre International, but Asia is such a big place you also have to wade through music from places like China, Korea, & Thailand. It helps if you can recognize Japanese names and words (though some western bands use more well known Japanese words in their names & song & album titles). It also helps if you can recognize Japanese when you hear it (I'm currently doing Japanese evening classes). (I actually find stuff by going through the Freshly Ripped every day & my main taste is indie or alternative music with female vocals - even better if she's singing in Japanese :) )

Sorry I haven't posted anything recently but there hasn't been anything worth recommending added to emusic for awhile (blame the labels / distributors for that).
I'd find these three recently though:

I Can Tell Lovely Tales by Teddy ~ indie pop (I just sampled this on a whim with some feeling that a band called Teddy might be Japanese; the Japanese do go for some weird names in English).
Poisson d'avril by Ohki Ayano ~ mellow "jazzy"(?) pop (there's a Japanese name for you).
Thunderbird Zozeal by Fujiigumi ~ j-pop.

There has been some other stuff but it tends to be mainly rather bland piano ballads with average vocals. I prefer to post music I find interesting & a little bit different. Hopefully we'll get some more interesting Japanese female vocal music soon on here.
Jellyfish May 27 at 9:33 AM EDT RE: Japanese female vocalists

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll check them out when my downloads refresh. I'm learning Japanese as a hobby and I like having Japanese audio input when I'm doing other work. It's pretty easy for me to spot a Japanese title but I don't think I would have guessed 'Teddy' haha nice one.

Some attempt by emusic to subdivide the Asian continent would make things a lot easier for us though. Oh well I suppose we can only dream...

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread and your lists. Keep it up!

Wow, what an amazing resource! I can't believe I hadn't found this sooner. It'll take me a while, but I look forward to checking out many of these. Here are a few (new-ish) albums that I don't see listed here:

Cult by HNC (Formerly known as "Hazel Nuts Chocolate") = Super-sweet electro pop for fans of Takako Minekawa.

The Dark Eternal Nights and Headquarter by Winnie = Melodic indie rock with both female and male vocals.

Quixotic by LAZYgunsBRISKY = Raw rock and roll a la Sleater-Kinney, Supersnazz.

Hajime Chitose by Hajime Chitose = Early effort by major label singer with sweet covers of Velvet Underground and Jimi Hendrix.

Thank You For Being A Friend by Curly Giraffe = A must-have! Each track features a different Japanese female vocalist, including many of my all-time favorite singers and bands: Kaela Kimura, Chara, Bonnie Pink, Love Psychedelico, Cocco and Yuko Ando. Apparently Curly Giraffe recruited these j-pop superstars to cover his best songs. It worked out beautifully!

Yume de Aimashou +4 by Yuki Murakami = Kind of light adult contemporary piano pop, but rather touching and pretty. See also While My Piano Gently Weeps.

Please also check my list for more Japanese goodies. Thanks for putting this thing together!

Hi there, this thread is great, thank you for all the effort you're putting into it.

Something I stumbled upon whilst browsing through and bouncing off your list -

Note of Seconds -schole Compilation vol.2

From the samples it seems to mostly consist of mellow acoustic guitar and piano pieces with a light IDM twist. I haven't downloaded any tracks yet (only have 9 credits left and am hoping for a full album to grab) but at least 2 tracks seem to allow inclusion in this thread

恋の光 by tokinowa (Ω)
Waterside Birds by Motohiro Nakashima (Ω)

This album seems to be very very much my kind of thing, after jumping to the artist's pages I reckon my monthly downloads will disappear very quickly in November. Lots of good stuff on the schole / TuneCore label.

I also found a Cokiyu remix (Ω) on the album Everlasting Truth by Re:plus, a pity eMusic still don't have her full album.

Hi MrCloud,
Thanks for the suggestions. I've already got the tokinowa track, but not the Motohiro Nakashima one (lovely track, but only a whisper of vocals) or the Cokiyu track (more of a guest vocal than a remix maybe (it's not on her album), but very nice). I've got the Cokiyu album on CD and it's lovely.
