RSS feeds

We recently re-released RSS feeds!!

Well almost - it's currently still a hidden feature - except to those who read this message.

To access RSS feeds, simply copy any of the BROWSE or CHARTS urls and replace "browse" or "charts" with "rss".

For example, I'm interested in the RSS feed for what is new today in Blues. I would therefore navigate by:

1. Clicking on the "NEW ON EMUSIC" tab
2. Clicking on the "FRESHLY RIPPED" button
3. Clicking on the "Blues" genre in the "REFINE BY" module on the left hand side
4. The URL in your browser should look like this: http://www.emusic.com/browse/n/b/-n/a/0-0/65+538+68+1200000292/0.html
5. Change the "browse" in the URL to "rss" - it should look like this: http://www.emusic.com/rss/n/b/-n/a/0-0/65+538+68+1200000292/0.html
6. Copy the RSS URL and paste it into your preferred RSS reader.

That's it!!

Here are a few RSS feed URLs you may find interesting:

* First 100 albums added today
http://www.emusic.com/rss/n/b/-n/a/0-100/65+538+68/0.html

* Top 25 albums downloaded this month
http://www.emusic.com/rss/0/b/-dbm/b/0-25/556/0.html

* Top 20 artists downloaded today with new albums this month
http://www.emusic.com/rss/0/a/-dat/a/0-0/538+553+65/0.html

As you see the possibilities are endless....

Enjoy

I read the message and I've already set up feeds for New This Week for the genres I'm interested in. Very cool. Thanks.

The RSS does not validate (the dates are not properly formatted). May cause problems for some readers...

[edit]: But kudos for adding this feature!
Sweets Aug 11 at 7:17 PM EDT RE: RSS feeds

Interesting problem.

The RSS 2.0 spec, http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/tech/rss, declares dates to be RFC 822 date compliant but goes on to say...
"All date-times in RSS conform to the Date and Time Specification of RFC 822, with the exception that the year may be expressed with two characters or four characters (four preferred)."
If any readers are giving trouble, post what you find here.

Oh... it's on now.
You don't know how on it is now.
Now... it's on.

No apparent troubles with my reader on my Mac.

One other thing, if for you want to see all the releases for this week or this month (or there are just too many freshly ripped) you'll need to hack the URL again.

For example (this is Electronic, new this month) take:
http://www.emusic.com/browse/0/b/-dbm/a/0-0/1200000281+65/0.html
and change the "0-0" to "0-100" - eMusic won't display more than 100 albums on a page so if you're after seeing all the releases for the month you'll then have to add another for "100-200"

So I'd now have these two in my Safari bookmark bar:
http://www.emusic.com/rss/0/b/-dbm/a/0-100/1200000281+65/0.html
http://www.emusic.com/rss/0/b/-dbm/a/100-200/1200000281+65/0.html

Very nice! Finished cramming some into Liferea with no problems!

Yeah, and that's lame, because it makes it less useful when sometimes albums still show up on the bottom of the list (I'm assuming they still do).

Thank you so much for posting this! This is a feature I've wanted for a long time. So much easier to check up on new releases. Thanks eMusic!

RSS feeds seem to have stoped updating.

yeah, I gave up on 'em awhile back. besides, i kept surfing to the what's new section out of habit (or impatience) anyways. maybe they'll return in the future?
mr_nobody Sep 22 at 5:55 PM EDT RE: RSS feeds

I'm not sure why you'd say that. They seem to be continuing to work for me...
jelwood01 Sep 22 at 6:56 PM EDT RE: RSS feeds

Still working for me as well.

They work for me too, but does anyone know why I'm only fed the first 15? I know that the New on eMusic pages list only 15 at a time, but I would like to get a feed for all the freshly rippeds on a given day.

They were working in that I could navigate them, but they had no new data.
Looks like they've started updating again. Maybe this message got to the right person :)
mr_nobody Sep 22 at 9:32 PM EDT RE: RSS feeds

I was wondering if maybe you had subscribed to rss feeds for genres with no new releases recently. With the arrival of touch and go, it seems like all the new releases are alt/punk so maybe if you were looking at the jazz or classical rss, there was nothing new?

Thanks, jelwood; that worked.

I was looking at this one

mr_nobody Sep 23 at 12:53 PM EDT RE: RSS feeds

That's odd...that exactly the same feed I am using in firefox and it never stopped updating for me. Must have been a problem with your reader...
Taniwha Sep 24 at 7:35 PM EDT RE: RSS feeds
in response to the message by Porieux
What's with that feed:// ????

You ought to be using content-type headers to describe the content. the bit before the : is the tranfser protocol, which should be http.

Unless i've missed something?
