A daring debut

Will Dutta’s music lies at the nexus where modern classical, New Age, and ambient electronica meet. He draws from all of them to create his own sonic geography: Sometimes it is lushly beautiful, other times it sounds as tortured and harsh as modern life, with textures that range from the stark purity of his piano to sounds heavily modified and manipulated by a bevy of producers.

It’s impossible to avoid the shadows of modern pioneers like Philip Glass and Brian Eno here, and Parergon (the word, by the way, means subordinate work) carries strong traces of the minimalism and atmospheres that are their hallmarks. But Dutta is a new generation, and his own man, used to working with producers and turntablists; collaboration is a vital part of his compositions. On both the opener, “Distance” and the disc’s centrepiece, the epic “Overcolour,” for example, he works with Warp veterans Plaid; they put their strained edges on the music, so that in a moment it can move from filigreed delicacy to the jaggedness of razor wire. It’s intense, roaring like a roller coaster until “Incarnation 11″ brings the breathing space of Dutta solo, but even that veers between the formal gentility and the dark, dramatic intensity of repeated chords played harder and harder, a deliberate study in contrasting emotions. Then Max de Wardener (who’s currently composing a concerto for Dutta) adds his frantic energy to “Aerophobia,” overlaying the soft notes of the piano with a disorienting scramble of beats and sounds and drones. It helps bring the closer, “Avril 14th,” into sharp focus, the music stripped down to just piano, the quiet romanticism coming as a soft exhalation of breath before quietly leaving.

With Parergon Dutta has created a daring debut, crammed with ambition but carried off with unerring vision and ability.

An adventure in reverberation and resonance.

While this disc does not specifically tout its healing qualities, the way it's produced and played gives it a natural healing vibration. Cynth is a flautist based out of Los Angeles who plays a combination of bamboo, Native American and brindle flutes. (She also acquits herself quite well on the panpipes.) The thing I love about this disc is how the flutes are overdubbed, often to the accompaniment of Tibetan bowls and bells, blowing like a clear breeze through the cathedral of the mind. But it's heart-centered music as well, especially on "Pyramid" and "Dream Lodge Dancer." Seven-time Grammy winner Roger Nichols helped out on production and it shows — even on a simple flute solo. The album, especially on headphones, opens up into an adventure in reverberation and resonance — a true tonic for the heart and mind.

Eschewing loud/quiet schizophrenia for desolate instrumentation, their second album breathes heavy with isolated beauty, again defying the confines of a three-piece. A series of shorter, four minute movements, this is bite-sized crescendo-core for anyone strapped for time, which is not to belittle their soaring mini-epics. Uniquely, much on offer here alters tempo, most notably on the title track. It's mostly bright, it's occasionally violent and it's always rewarding.

But the mode of production (i.e., the fact that they're using samples at all) is pure 21st century. Released to critical acclaim in 1999, Chakra Healing Chants is for serious, deep work on the body. Goldman uses overtone chanting on almost every track, with a pulsing, rumbling rhythm that rolls beneath the pitch of angelic harmonies and belly rattling "om"s. The opening track, "Primal Ground," sounds like a Tibetan monastery coming at you from every direction and is an intense way to begin any massage. If the intent is to take the recipient right out of this world immediately, then this is the place to start.

With only three albums to their credit, Rasa have quickly become a spiritual force in new age music. Hans Christian (bass, cello, production) and Kim Waters (vocals) continue their fine exploration of the sensual and sacred on Shelter. Rasa's interpretation of traditional material is exceptional. While honoring the spirit of the bhajan on a track like "Jaya Radha," their rendition has an almost Celtic feel to it, sounding more like Clannad than classical Indian, but blessedly free of subversion or cultural plunder. Simply sublime.

On tracks like "Initiation," the results are magical. The didge creates a lush drone underneath a slightly treated duduk, a light synth and the occasional whale cry. On both this and Kamal's previous whale recording, Reiki Whale Song, he handles the cries of the cetaceans with considerable sensitivity and compositional skill, giving them a true place inside of his recordings and not merely tacking them on as sample fodder. This is a powerful and deeply integrated project, showing Kamal's ongoing commitment to co-create with the whales while crafting a soothing, healing, experience.

Das 'vocals have a world-weariness that gives these bhajans an almost bluesy feel that underscores the rapture and joy in his voice as a hard-won triumph of the spirit. Jim Wilson (production), Jai Uttal (harmonium and dotar) and Geoffrey Gordon (percussion) join Das on most of the tracks. While the majority of the tracks share an acoustic sparseness with Das 'voice, the Dub Farm remix of "Hanuman Baba" gives that track a driving, surging quality that underscores his repeated mantra of "I'm all in" (a phrase that hails from No Limit Texas Hold 'Em style of poker). Das uses the term in a deeply ironic twist, signifying his total, no-holds-barred commitment to the life of Spirit. It's a sentiment heard throughout this powerful testament of devotion and joy.

The prolific flautist lets in the light on this 2000 recording, and it's just as bright and joyous as the title implies, a well-earned break in Deuter's deeply meditative journey. The shift is apparent from the bouncing first track, the Andreas Wollenweider-esque "Zauberwald"; with the harp both driving the melody and supporting it rhythmically, it's a rare instance of Deuter's flute playing being just part of the composition and not the center. Next, the loping "Yellow Mandala" fuses Andean music and hop-a-long Western movie scores, Deuter leading the way with treated flute sounds that cleverly straddle the Peruvian pan pipe and modern flute. "Sunlight Dancing" continues in the heliotropic spirit as flute and tabla dance back and forth in divine interplay, once again reinforcing the playfulness and lightness of spirit coursing both through Deuter himself and the majority of Sun Spirit. Even "Green Mandala," more in keeping with the contemplative and ambient mode of most of Deuter's recordings, shimmers at the edges with lilting piano and bright washes of synth, giving the track a golden, atmospheric sheen. While it doesn't necessarily convey all of the deep yearning and meditative devotion of most of Deuter's recordings, Sun Spirit is a welcome respite — it's a joy to listen in on the whimsical side of this often serious composer and musician.

The mantras sung in these ancient bhajans are the equivalent of prayers that act as formulas for protection, guidance, clarity and the opening of the heart center. Westerners need not concern themselves with the literal meaning of the Sanskrit words that power these paeans to Hindu deities. The power lies in the sound of the words themselves and the voices that carry the frequency of their spiritual intent. Acoustic guitar, finger symbols, harmonium, flute and light synths add a flavor of evocative ambience to the whole affair. The sum effect of Namaste's devotion and delivery is a set of recordings that is physically relaxing, emotionally refreshing and spiritually invigorating.

Dunster often uses traditional drones as a backdrop to his loping reels, driven by tabla and dumbek. On "Circlemakers," he incorporates accordion, guitar and bansuri flute to create an oriental-flavored sea-shanty. It's an unusual mix at times, but when he finds all the right elements, like on the Celtic blues-tinged "Rag Shivranjani," it's a delight.
