William Brittelle, Television Landscape

Label: New Amsterdam

What happens when a bunch of classical nerds get together and try to build an AOR-Rock Masterpiece? Television Landscape is the rather astonishing answer to what sounds like the setup to an obscure joke. William Brittelle is a young composer with an identity crisis; like many young composers his age, he didn't quite know where he "fit." After much angst and hand-wringing, Brittelle, a dropout from a graduate program for composition, decided to cast aside his doubts and make an unabashed paean to the music he loved — specifically, album-oriented… more »

Yes, Drama

1994 | Label: Rhino/Elektra

So it probably went something like: "Hey, how about we take the three remaining members of Yes and team them with the Buggles — you know, the 'Video Killed the Radio Star' guys? It's so crazy it just might work!" Or not. The truth is, what looked like an ill fit was an ill fit. While Trevor Horn's voice shared Jon Anderson's distinctive reediness, he constantly seems to be stretching, futilely, to match both the latter's upper vocal reaches and knack for cosmic musings. And Geoff Downes's relatively compact yet… more »

Yes, Yesstory

1992 | Label: Rhino/Elektra

Given Yes's multiple phases and lineups — not to mention their penchant for llllloooooonnnnngggg tracks — any attempt at a comprehensive "highlights" collection is going to come up lacking. But 1992's Yesstory does a darn good job tracking the English group's run from late '60s youthful inventiveness through '70s prog excess to an unlikely triumphant '80s reinvention. The three core catalog albums (The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge) are well represented, but the revelations are in the tracks framing those selections. In particular, five tracks showcasing the original… more »

Yes, The Yes Album

1971 | Label: Rhino/Elektra

Is it too much to compare guitarist Steve Howe replacing Peter Banks in Yes with Lou Gehrig stepping in for Wally Pipp with the Yankees? Maybe not. Rarely has a new guy — especially one who isn't a frontman — had as profound an impact on the sound of an already established (or at least semi-established) band as the remarkably talented Howe did on Yes's third album. That's no slight on Banks, whose imaginative jazzy digressions helped the band set its distinctive, ambitious course from the get-go. And it's certainly… more »

Kicking at the Boundaries of Metal

By Jon Wiederhorn, eMusic Contributor

As they age, extreme metal merchants often inject various non-metallic styles into their songs in order to hasten their musical growth. Sometimes, as with Alcest and Jesu, they develop to the point where their original vision is at least partially consumed by their new sounds, and their albums feature as many or more elements of post-rock, prog, hardcore, alternative, industrial or jazz as they do metal. Regardless of the genres in which they dabble, acts… more »
