“‘Early’ Goo Goo Dolls” were metal. They didn’t work with Westerberg til they’d already split with their original drummer and gone mainstream.

That being said, leaving The Dogmatics “Thayer Street” off this list is criminal. They were contemporaries of the ‘Mats and were a hugely underrated, unnoticed–but GREAT–band.

I’d have thought “Hi, We’re The Replacements” by They Might Be Giants woulda been a shoo-in. It may have been a b-sides for the Johns, but they do a pretty solid job of splicing the Mat’s DNA musically and adding good-natured jabs at the band’s live, erm, reputation.

The Tom Petty rip has always bugged me. I mean, petty has never been less than impressive, but that line has forever caused me pain. Never realized that they shared a bill, so the plagiarism now makes more sense in that it was a nod to Westerberg, a thrash-genius if there ever was one.
