Remembering James Brown

The passing of James Brown on Christmas Day cast a dark cloud not only over the holidays, but over music itself. The many eulogies that appeared in the press only scratched the surface of Brown's greatness and influence — any university that should elect to create a James Brown Studies department gets our wholehearted endorsement and admissions application.

While our own James Brown catalogue is limited — the major labels monopolize his essential releases — eMusic does boast an impressive collection of key Brown roots, contemporaries and followers, 16 of which can be found below. As we all look back on the man's ridiculously great and wide-ranging legacy, please don't neglect to pay homage to those who came before and after.
