The Music of Mad Men

Three seasons in, AMC's Mad Men has proven to be a show as much about authenticity as the hidden self. Creator Matthew Weiner is famously strict, some have said to the point of mania, about period details on the show, from cigarette brands to children's toys to women's undergarments. The same is true for the show's music, which is often a deliciously curated collection of late 1950s and early 1960s pop, jazz, folk, and doo wop. Below is a sort of field guide to some classic Mad Men music moments, with some footnotes for hardcore fans. For those not yet watching or caught up, beware of spoilers. But at least let yourself explore some classic songs from a bygone era.
