Curren$y, The Stoned Immaculate (Deluxe Version)

  • 2012
  • Label: Warner Bros.

Aiming higher without much compromise

In an era when nearly all major label rap records are marked by a schizophrenic mélange of “pop” and “street” tracks (see: Minaj, Nicki), or a general scaling back of all the qualities that once made the rapper interesting (see: else, everyone), Curren$y has established a cultish following with an auteur-driven string of albums remarkable in terms of both quality and quantity. And while his latest, The Stoned Immaculate, aims (you might say) even higher, it does so without much compromise, featuring reliably strong production from usual suspects like Monsta Beatz and Big K.R.I.T. and cameos by 2 Chainz, Estelle and Daz Dillinger. Curren$y’s weed fixation makes the content of his raps consistent, but against this backdrop his flows are always changing, slipping in and out of double time or stacking words on top of each other until line breaks go up in smoke.
