Cooper-Moore is a marginal figure in the jazz world, a multi-instrumentalist, composer and instrument builder who is best known for his work in the stylistic free-for-all that is the downtown New York scene, playing in groups like the Susie Ibarra Trio, and Triptych Myth. This solo piano recital is a perfect introduction to his odd, modal-jazz based musical world, in which he sometimes seems to be attempting to find a common ground between folk and free jazz. His percussive piano style encompasses Jaki Byard's polyglot whimsy, McCoy Tyner's power and Cecil Taylor's hard-hitting tone clusters.
