Nite Jewel, Am I Real? – EP
More than a simple stopgap EP
As promising as Nite Jewel's Good Evening was, it should have come with a warning: "What we've got here is failure to enunciate." It was hard not to wish Romana Gonzalez would, occasionally, let syllables breathe, rather than simply dunking them in bottomless pints of syrup.
More than just a simple stopgap EP, Am I Real? hints at several logical next steps for Album No. 2. Not just haze-free hooks, either — though the funk-flecked title track and the handclap-propelled "Another Horizon" have plenty of those. Breakup ballad "Forget You & I" lifts its lonesome synth lines from Boards of Canada's sample bank while "White Lies" comes across like a clouded piece of Glass Candy — a narcotic disco tune that might as well be called "White Lines." And if you miss the soft focus approach of the singer/producer's past work, there's always the drunken midnight drive melody of "Falling Far," a reminder of where it all started for the momentarily nostalgic.
