RJD2, Deadringer: Deluxe
The heir to DJ Shadow's landmark 1996 Endtroducing
Though he has credibility as a hip-hop producer, RJD2 belongs here in part because Deadringer was so often (and accurately) described as an heir to DJ Shadow's landmark 1996 Endtroducing. Sharing that record's adventurous musical spirit and sampling virtuosity, RJD2 pushes his own work in a messier, less carefully composed direction. The album as a whole takes a few listens to absorb, rushing by in a blur of obscure soul samples ("Smoke & Mirrors," "Good Times Roll Pt. 2") thunderous cut & paste drum breaks ("Chicken-Bone Circuit") and a couple of worthy MC cuts (in particular "Final Frontier" featuring Blueprint).
