Powerfully sung and warmly produced vintage country and soul

A half hour of powerfully sung and warmly produced vintage country and soul in the style of Dusty Springfield or Linda Ronstadt; in other words, the exact kind of record that most people expected Jenny Lewis to put out on Saddle Creek at some point. But where her album with the Watson Twins stumbled, former D.C. indie also-ran Laura Burhenn succeeded on her 2010 debut as Mynabirds. Worlds away from the polite pop of Georgie James, Burhenn reveals herself as a commanding and compelling singer/songwriter on What We Lose in the Fire, and would later channel the force of her vocals into the politically and rhythmically aggressive Generals two years later.
