Young Galaxy, Invisible Republic
Hazy, new-wave shoegaze
Young Galaxy's take on new-wave shoegaze invites a lot of broad comparisons — to Luna, Galaxie 500, and Spiritualized, especially — but this Montreal-based band churns out its own kind of hazy, atmospheric pop. Invisible Republic, the band's second record, is eminently listenable, but also surprisingly sophisticated: Dueling vocalists Stephen Ramsay and Catherine McCandless have an easy, symbiotic rapport, and their harmonies are always shimmering and celestial. When these tracks peak, it's the kind of climax that hits in the gut, hard — and then lingers indefinitely.
