Lost Soul: 1965-1975
If you took oldies radio’s word for it, you might think there were only ever a few dozen soul hits. But the years from 1965 to 1975–after Stax/Volt formed its alliance with Atlantic, and before the rise of disco–were an unbelievably fertile period for black American pop: hard rhythm-and-blues, roaring gospel, gentle soul, political funk, deep blues, bedroom-eyed harmony groups and percolating instrumentals were side-by-side on radio stations and in the singles racks. Every one of the songs on this station was a legitimate R&B chart hit during those years, and most of them have barely been heard for decades.
