All of this is wrapped up in Bop ’til you stop, our celebration of bebop in all its permutations and splendor. We’ll keep the motor running — backdating toward the roots and updating the latest bop-centric releases that come to site — so punch up and enjoy.

When radio was rock’s gatekeeper, before everything got hyphenated, sliced and diced by genre and sub-genre,
there was always one mainstream station you could rely on to play the music you liked — most of the time. Behind the scenes, program directors tried to find the right balance between new music, recent favorites and classic oldies. That’s what we’re aiming for here: a balance between fresh and familiar, sometimes a little mainstream, sometimes pushing the envelope.

And if you don’t like a particular song, chances are good, really good, that you’ll like the next one.

From the oldest school to the newest thing, torch songs to Cubop, this first edition takes an open-minded but semi-purist (no “smooth jazz” thank you) approach to the most notable jazz releases from the first half of 2011. Yes, stylistically it is all over the map: That’s why jazz is known as “the sound of surprise.”

The dark (but not explicitly Satanic) songs of Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits inspired a wave of British ’80s martial folk bands, which incorporated elements of early industrial music with acoustic folk strumming, militant beats and lyrics about death, the apocalypse and the devil.

With black candles positioned in a pentagram around our speakers, eMusic delved into the history of evil, politically incorrect and murderous music to assemble the 13 best Satanic folk songs.

As they age, extreme metal merchants often inject various non-metallic styles into their songs in order to hasten their musical growth. Sometimes, as with Alcest and Jesu, they develop to the point where their original vision is at least partially consumed by their new sounds, and their albums feature as many or more elements of post-rock, prog, hardcore, alternative, industrial or jazz as they do metal. Regardless of the genres in which they dabble, acts that create the right synergy between experimentation and extremism can be breathtaking to listen to. Whether they strive to create nightmarish soundscapes, construction site cacophony, or mind-bending puzzles of sound, the bands on “Kicking at the Boundaries of Metal” are about as interested in making conventional music as they are in being categorized in any specific genres. They may never be rock stars, but many have already ascended to a level of artistry that transcends mere celebrity.
