By Andrew Parks, eMusic ContributorMany Deftones fans seemed shocked when singer Chino Moreno announced a new side project with three-fifths of ISIS — everyone but frontman Aaron Turner and guitarist Michael Gallagher — last year. But they shouldn't have… more »
By Ryan Reed, eMusic ContributorBlack Sabbath's self-titled debut, 1970's Black Sabbath, set the unholy blueprint: Tony Iommi's blood-curling riffs, Ozzy Osbourne's demonic howl, and the versatile rhythms of bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward. Even still, few could… more »
By Andrew Parks, eMusic ContributorOn paper, the nearly two hours of rarities and previously unreleased material on Temporal looks more like an attic-clearing exercise – the proverbial nail in the coffin of Isis's 13-year career – than a must-listen.… more »
By Andrew Parks, eMusic ContributorAnyone still mourning the loss of ISIS needs to pause for a second and consider just how prolific its former frontman (Aaron Turner) has been since the band's split a couple years back. Aside from the art projects Turner happily shares on his Feral Pig blog, and the growing roster of his vinyl-driven SIGE Records imprint, the singer/guitarist seems to be in a new band every other month. Earlier this year, it was the crusty hardcore of Split Cranium and the ever-evolving sound experiments of Mamiffer; now we're happy to report that Turner's back alongside two-thirds of Khanate for the long-awaited return of Jodis.
In case you're unfamiliar, here's what Turner's Hydra Head label had to say about eMusic's exclusive single edit of "Broken Ground":

By Andrew Parks, eMusic ContributorWhile Aaron Turner's spent most of the past year cranking out left field LPs on SIGE Records — a side label with his wife/Mamiffer bandmate, Faith Coloccia — the former Isis frontman gets back to his glass-guzzling roots on Split Cranium's debut album, a collaboration with Circle's Jussi Lehtisalo that's about as crusty as hardcore punk gets. And just in case you forgot how widescreen Turner's last full-time job was, the record's closing track ("Retrace the Circle") tortures your speakers for more than eight minutes, running the singer's melodies straight into an electrical fence repeatedly.

By Dan Epstein, eMusic ContributorFive full-length studio albums into a twelve-year career, Isis have pretty much found their niche, and that niche lies somewhere between Tool's angst-filled prog-isms, Mogwai's majestic art-rock instros and Sunn 0)))'s ambient metal drones. Wavering… more »
