In an interview conducted in 2009, Kill Rock Stars founder Slim Moon described the label’s roster as being comprised of “outsiders,” saying, “[They were] doing things differently. I worked with a lot of bands who broke the rules of what was supposed to be a ‘rock band.’”

A simple glance at the label’s roster supports his point. Whether they’re epoch-making albums by artists like Sleater-Kinney, Elliott Smith and The Decemberists or defiant boundary-pushers by Deerhoof and OOIOO, the constant through every Kill Rock Stars release has been a rebellious spirit.
