The Rolling Stones Reveal North American Run of ’50 and Counting’

A shot from the latest Stones trailer

As promised earlier this year, The Rolling Stones have finally added a second round of dates to their 50th anniversary tour. Set to launch at L.A.'s Staples Center — date to-be-determined due to the NBA/NHL playoffs — the trek will hit nine cities between now and mid-June. Which may not seem like much, but it's more than the three stops the band made last year.

"We did a few shows in London and New York last year and had such a good time that we thought let's do some more," frontman Mick Jagger said in a press release. "It's a good show. Lots of the classic stuff everyone wants to hear...with a few little gems tucked in here and there. The stage is shaped like lips and goes off into the venue so I get to run around in the crowd. It's great fun to be able to get that close to the audience."

"From day one at rehearsals it sounded so fresh," added guitarist Keith Richards. "You could tell that everybody was dying to get their teeth into it. It was like...open the gates...let us out!"

Ticket info can be found at the group's official site; here are the dates and details... more »

Listen: Tom Waits and Keith Richards Team Up For Pirate Tribute Album

How'd that rhino get in there?

Now that the word "pirate" is synonymous with Johnny Depp and countless adaptions of a rusty old Disney ride, the former's apparently not ready to put his eye patch away. Due out February 19th through Anti-, Son of Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys is a two-disc collection of songs meant for sailing the high seas. And while that concept may seem thin, it's difficult to deny the potential awesomeness of a double LP that features duets between Courtney Love and Michael Stipe; Iggy Pop and A Hawk and a Hacksaw; Shilpa Ray, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis; and well, the list goes on. It also includes solo performances from Michael Gira, Robyn Hitchcock and Marc Almond.

"All you're going to have to do is wait for an announcement," Keith Richards tells Rolling Stone in their new issue, referring to the rumored 2013 tour of The Rolling Stones. "It would be dopey to bring things up to this level and say, 'Well, that's that, 50 years, bye-bye.'"

By 'this level', Richards means the band's recent run of anniversary shows in London, Brooklyn and New Jersey, which featured catalogue-skimming set lists and such esteemed onstage guests as the Black Keys, Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen and Mary J. Blige. Since then, talk has turned to a possible Coachella appearance this April, although Mick Jagger was quick to downplay reports that organizers had approached the band.

"I always said that we'd see how this would go, and then we'd think about doing more [shows] — or not" he explains. "At the same time, a gig's a gig. The curtain opens and there you are. I just get the feeling — they're itching at the bit now. This thing wasn't enough."

We shall see. In the meantime, you can read the rest of David Fricke's Rolling Stone piece here, and watch footage of the Stones playing "Paint It Black" below... more »
