By Laura Leebove, Deputy EditorHere's how to be sure I don't listen to a record: Tell me it's sad, quiet, electro-poppy music made by just a kid in his bedroom. Chances are, the first thing I'll think is, "Uh oh, I bet it's chillwave," and I'll run far and fast in the other direction. I'm not sure what made me give Youth Lagoon — aka Trevor Powers, an early-20-something from Idaho — a chance, but after the few listens it took me to really get into it, The Year of Hibernation became one of my favorite albums of 2011. (Contrary to what I expected, it's not chillwave.) Powers's songs are made up of woozy synths and drum machines, fronted by his tiny voice.
